History of Jordan

Jordan is a land steeped in history. It was home to some of humanity’s oldest settlements and villages, and the ruins of many of the world’s great civilizations can still be seen today. As a crossroads in the Middle East, the Jordanian lands and Palestine served as a strategic link connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Thus, since the dawn of civilization, Jordanian geography has given an important role to play as a conduit for trade and communication, linking the East, West, North, and South. Jordan continues to play this role today. Take an interactive tour through Jordan’s history starting from the Paleolithic era, all the way to the modern era with an interactive historical timeline.

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a wonderful city of contrasts – a unique mix of old and new, an ideal location on a mountainous area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley.

In the commercial heart of the city, ultra-modern buildings, hotels, and smart restaurants, art galleries, and shops rub shoulders comfortably with traditional cafes and small artisan workshops. Everywhere there is evidence of the city’s ancient past.
Due to the city’s contemporary prosperity and temperate climate, nearly half of Jordan’s population is concentrated in the Amman area. Residential suburbs consist mainly of tree-lined streets and avenues surrounded by elegant white homes that are nearly uniform according to municipal law, which stipulates that all buildings must face local stone. The downtown area is much older and more traditional with small businesses producing and selling everything from fine jewelry to everyday household items. The people of Oman are multicultural, multi-denominational, well-educated, and very hospitable. They welcome visitors and are proud to show them their wonderful and vibrant city.
